“SHUT THE F**K UP”: Graduations Have Been A Total Mess This Year Due To 1 “Bipolar” Topic

Nothing like threatening the future of the youth as soon as they graduate.

Get ready to turn your tassels because it's grad season, y'all!

Graduates throw their caps into the air with the glow of the sun peeking through

Not to flex, but I got my Bachelor of Arts last year. 💪😮‍💨

Which (luckily) allowed me to avoid the shitshow taking place at many graduations this year...

A bunch of commencement speakers across the nation have been mentioning a topic that a LOT of students aren't fond of: artificial intelligence.

Rows of humanoid robots working at a futuristic assembly line with glowing interfaces with one of the robots' face covered by a tomato emoji with text that reads "*throws tomatoes*"

Let's start with an honest mistake as an example. At one graduation, some students' names didn't get called due to AI.

The speaker said, "Here's what's happening. We're using a new AI system as our reader..." Not surprisingly, boos ensued, which then caused the speaker to...laugh? Interesting reaction.

This person emphasized how tragic the situation was:

Tweet criticizing the use of AI in graduations, mentioning tuition costs, effort, the banning of AI for student papers, and calling it "peak laziness"

At another graduation, a speaker brought up AI when discussing change. She stated, "Change can be daunting. The rise of artificial intelligence is the next Industrial Revolution..." Queue the boos yet again.

She also proceeded to laugh and act confused for a second before saying, "Okay, I struck a chord. May I finish? Only a few years ago, AI was not a factor in our lives..." This caused cheers to erupt.

The speaker responded to the cheers by stating, "Okay, we've got a bipolar topic here, I see," which did NOT sit well with people:

Tweet reads "Polarizing is the word she’s looking for. Bipolar is a medical disorder, not an adjective. This woman irks me on multiple levels."

People also acknowledged that she was preaching to the wrong crowd:

Tweet reads "Telling a room full of creative Arts and Humanities graduates that their biggest job competitor is 'the next industrial revolution' is peak tone-deafness"

Moving on to the more...sinister mentions, former Google CEO Eric Schmidt was booed for quite a while during his long-winded speech about AI. To spare you some time, I'll provide just a couple of his notable quotes.

"The question is not whether AI will shape the world, it will. The question is whether or not you will shape artificial intelligence..."

He then talks about having respect for people you disagree with and says, "If we build artificial intelligence that reflects those values, the world would be unimaginably better for it."

This person had some noteworthy questions in response to his spiel:

Tweet asks, "Can AI make their lives less expensive? Will they be able to afford the great advances you describe if they have no jobs? Will they all have personal agency in their futures?"

Lastly, Scott Borchetta, the CEO of Big Machine Records, said "AI is rewriting production as we sit here," during his commencement speech.

Scott Borchetta speaking at a event labeled "Mr. Borchetta in the flesh"

When graduates booed him, he doubled down and said, "I know it. Deal with it. Like I said, it's a tool." This, of course, led to more boos, which caused him to say, "Hey, like I said, you can hear me now, or you can pay me later."

Considering his background with a world-renowned pop star, people were reallyyy fed up:

Tweet reads "The man who sold Taylor Swift's masters to Scooter Braun just told students at their own graduation to 'deal with it' when he bragged about AI taking their jobs"
Tweet reads "And delivered with a smarmy smile and psycho shark eyes."

As you have already seen, these commencement speech flops have the internet talking. With AI on the rise, many people are outraged and scared for the future:

Text expressing frustration about AI being seen as inevitable, and criticism of long-standard work hours amidst rollbacks of remote work, ending it by saying "SHUT THE FUCK UP"
Tweet calls the speakers "tone deaf" and says "The irony? Unlike AI, they're not learning as they go based on the feedback (boos) they're getting"
Tweet reads "Younger generations need to have a purpose, the AI threat on the youth is serious"

Others are disagreeing with the graduates:

Tweet reads "AI booed at BA grad ceremony is peak Luddite energy. It's not replacing creativity; it's the ultimate tool to10x it. Adapt or get left in the dust"
Tweet reads "Laughingly, ~99.9% of the graduates used AI to make it to graduation. Hypocritical! And at this point, completely expected"
Tweet reads "I think society is past the point of caring much about what university students consider important"

What do you think about the rise of AI? Do you agree with the graduates or sympathize with the speakers? Share your thoughts in the comments.
