Following a leak of his tax returns, Donald Trump has reached a settlement with the IRS, which includes a pledge stating the IRS is "FOREVER BARRED" from pursuing claims it may have against Donald Trump, his relatives, or his companies, according to a one-page document on the Department of Justice website that was signed by Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche.
The agreement appears to have rubbed Americans the wrong way, and they're sounding off online as both lawmakers and the general public question why someone would want such a pledge added.
BuzzFeed reached out to the White House and the Department of Justice for comment. DOJ spokesperson Natalie Baldassarre sent us the following:
"As is customary in settlements, both sides have executed waivers of a variety of claims that were or could have been brought. There would be little point in settling several significant claims if either party could simply turn around and seek to initiative more adverse claims that could have been pursued previously.
The agreement allows for subsequent 'waivers' to get incorporated by reference—Part IV.A. Plaintiffs themselves executed a broad waiver, as well (Part III.B).
This is only with respect to existing audits, not future."
