Odds are you haven't thought about AQUA for quite some time.
And if you did happen to think of the '90s Europop group in recent years, it was probably during the Barbie movie run in '23, when you might have added their one big hit, "Barbie Girl," to your playlist alongside the Ryan Gosling Oscars banger, "I'm Just Ken."
Well, this week AQUA had a big announcement: The '90s bubble gum band is calling it quits after 30 years.
The Danish pop group posted the news on Instagram:
"After many incredible years, we have decided to close the chapter of AQUA as a live band," they wrote. "AQUA has been such a huge part of our lives, and together we’ve had the chance to experience more than we ever dared to dream of."
"We’ve traveled the world countless times, met so many wonderful people, sung together with millions of you, and shared memories that we will carry with us forever," the post continued. "When you’ve been together for this long, you also learn when it’s time to protect what you’ve created together. For us, this feels like the right moment to say goodbye, while the memories are still strong, and while the love for the music, the story, and each other remains intact."
"From the bottom of our hearts: thank you to everyone who has been part of this journey over the past 30 years," they concluded. "Thank you for the love, the energy, the support, and for all the moments we’ve shared together. Nothing but love and gratitude from here on. Endless love ❤️ Lene, René & Søren"
AQUA is peacing out, ya'll. I had to lock in on Twitter to see how people were taking this surprising news. As expected, they were taking it as hilariously as '90s kids could:
"It’s already too much going on in the world. We can’t lose Aqua too!!"
"First the Fat Boys breakup…"
"I'm not telling my four year-old about this. Too many questions that I can't answer will arise."
"Not Aqua"
"Noooooooooooooo, how else can life be plastic and fantastic"
"Almost 30 years of pure, unadulterated pop joy. They gave us one of the most iconic songs in human history. End of an era."
"Barbie Girl was literally the soundtrack of my childhood End of an era… thank you for the bops Aqua"
I have to admit, I was only familiar with their 1997 smash "Barbie Girl." But after seeing many people on social media recommend their song, "Turn Back Time," I gave it a listen and it's definitely a moody bop.
