It's been a minute since the news really dominated your feed, but you probably remember Shakira's shocking split with her ex Gerard Piqué, with whom she shares two children, back in 2022.
The split came after 11 years together, and the fallout was seismic enough to last for nearly an entire year — encompassing allegations of infidelity, a poorly-received response from Gerard, and a massive hit song that doubled as a diss track against Gerard.
In the interview, Shakira described the divorce as "the darkest moment" that led to "the dissolution of [their] family." She also explained that the breakup took place while she was taking care of her father after he'd suffered a severe fall.
“I’ve been through so much pain, but it has made me perhaps in an unforeseen way a wiser person — or stronger, at least,” Shakira said. “They say that what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger and it is true. It’s amazing to learn that humans have a resilience that we can resort to at any moment in our lives.”
“Sometimes through hardships and through pain is how we discover how strong we can be. Suffering sometimes makes you a better person, makes you value friends and support."
Shakira went on to say that “life sometimes can be a bitch,” but it is “also beautiful and made of light and shadows.” “So I thank life for every single moment, the bright ones and the dark ones, the people who have made me suffer because they have become my masters who have taught me lessons, very valuable lessons,” she added.
Shakira also went on to say that she'll “always have that gratitude in [her] heart for the father of [her] kids,” while also crediting the relationship with making her “the mother that [she] is today.” She also cleared the air on whether her romantic life is currently active.
“There’s no space or time in my life for that," she said. "My plate is quite full."
